There is no greater compliment for an architect than a call from a past client sharing how a project has had a positive impact in their life. I recently heard from the owners of Hampden Road, Sale, a project I completed a few years ago.

They reached out with some incredible news: as they prepare to move up the property ladder, their home has been valued at £200,000 more than its pre-extension price. In the words of the estate agent, it is "one of the best of its type" on the market, with every potential buyer falling in love with the design.

The Brief: Maximising the Footprint

The project was a classic Victorian end-terrace. While these homes have bags of character, they often suffer from narrow, dark kitchens and a lack of functional utility space. The goal was to create a contemporary side-return extension that enhanced how the home functioned.

Key Design Features:

  • Up to the Boundary : A simple but effective lean-to extension built right up to the boundary, creating an open-plan kitchen and dining area.

  • The "Luxury" Essentials: We managed to integrate a dedicated utility room and a downstairs WC—features that are incredibly rare for this style of property and a major selling point for modern buyers.

  • Light & Volume: By incorporating a vaulted ceiling and a large frameless rooflight, we flooded the once-dark terrace with natural light.

  • Seamless Connection: Large bi-fold doors were installed to bridge the gap between the new kitchen island and the outdoor patio, perfect for hosting and family life.

Value of Good Design

This project is a prime example of why architectural input is an investment, not a cost. While the clients have enjoyed a vastly improved lifestyle over the last few years, they are now seeing the tangible financial reward of good design.

A thoughtful extension doesn't just add a room; it solves problems, creates light, and adds the "wow factor" that sets a property apart in a competitive market.
